Kampong Cham Set to Welcome New Tourism Standard Port Along the Mekong River

Phnom Penh, March 29, 2024 – In a significant development aimed at boosting the tourism sector, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, in collaboration with the Kampong Cham provincial administration, has announced plans to construct a tourism-standard port along the Mekong River in Kampong Cham province. This initiative seeks to enhance the docking facilities for cruise ships, promising a substantial uplift in the region's tourism infrastructure.

A recent joint inspection by officials from the Ministry and the provincial administration evaluated potential sites along the riverbank in Kampong Cham city for the proposed port. The assessment highlighted the location's suitability, including ample space for essential port infrastructure such as tourist waiting rooms and restroom facilities.

Spokesperson for the Ministry, Phan Rim, emphasized the importance of the project in a statement on March 29. "Kampong Cham province is poised to host a standard port for cruise ships, significantly improving the experience for both national and international tourists visiting our tourism resorts," Rim explained. He pointed out the limitations of the current docking facilities, underscoring the need for a port that meets safety standards and aesthetic criteria to accommodate international cruise ships.

The evaluation conducted by the delegation revealed that the selected site possesses favorable conditions for the development of the port, including a large area for constructing the necessary port infrastructure. Following this preliminary assessment, a technical team from the Ministry is slated to undertake a detailed study. This subsequent phase will focus on examining the technical conditions, water flow dynamics, and potential challenges and obstacles within the waterway, ensuring the project's feasibility and success.

This initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing Kampong Cham's appeal as a tourist destination, with the new port facility expected to play a pivotal role in attracting more visitors to the province. The development of the tourism-standard port along the Mekong River not only promises to enhance the accessibility and experience for cruise ship passengers but also signifies a broader commitment to promoting tourism and economic growth in the region.
